Who we are

The José Fernandes de Araújo Foundation (FJFA) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization whose mission is to contribute to social inclusion, the building of citizenship and a dignified life.

The institution was created by Cardinal Dom Serafim Fernandes de Araújo, on June 18, 1980, at the time Dean of the Catholic University of Minas Gerais / UCMG (current PUC / MG).

Originally, the FJFA was instituted with the objective of financially aiding students in need of the Catholic University who could not afford the tuition costs. From 2010 on, it was organized and restructured to seek new strands of action without, however, losing the greater focus, which is to support students in situations of economic vulnerability to have a quality education.

Currently, there are three institutions with which the Foundation has a partnership: House of the Man of Nazareth (CHN), Social Assistance and Inclusion Center (CAIS) and São Gabriel Parish Social Work (OSPSG).

The FJFA is considered by the Government of the State of Minas Gerais (Law no. 9,172, May 21, 1986) and the Federal Government (Decree No. 4693, dated May 31, 1984) to be of public utility.

Philosophy

In granting financial aid to students with economic needs, the Foundation takes into account that the benefits should have a social and Christian meaning and be multipliers of personal qualification. It avoids any paternalistic form of aid, promoting forms of participation of the beneficiary in its own process of formation and improvement, besides, by the rotation of the benefit, through the return, participate in the improvement of other beneficiaries.

In this way, the Foundation aims to act as a promoter of social and Christian education, towards the sense of justice and the meaning of the "other," based on an evangelical distributive consciousness. The commitment of the student to the Foundation, according to the philosophy of its founder, Dom Serafim, should not be limited to the commitments of contractual clauses, but should be expanded, through the core of monitoring and advisory services between the parties. Attendance and orientation to the student, during his / her course, will continue through the search of conditions for professional referral at the end of the course.
